Americans overcome red hot goalie, advance to Semi’s…

It wasn’t the story of Team USA advancing to the Semifinals, but rather the story of a hot goaltender keeping his otherwise inferior team in the game until the very end.

The Americans outshot the Swiss 44-19 but only won by a score of 2-0. Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller put on a clinic, turning aside 42 US shots and only allowing a single goal.

New Jersey Devils forward Zach Parise bagged his first goal of the tournament – and the first of the game for the Americans – in the opening minutes of the third period. He then added an empty netter in the closing seconds.

Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Suter failed to record a point for the first time in Vancouver but did lead the US in ice time (24:05). He also had four shots on goal and even had a goal disallowed when Ryan Kesler was whistled for high-sticking as the puck hit the back the net.

The Americans will play the winner of tonight’s Finland vs. Czech Republic game.
