Hopefully, success at the WC will give Craig Smith a boost of confidence going into next season. He’s a player who, when feeling confident plays great hockey; a great skater and puckhandler. But he disappears when struggling, and not just offensively. He won’t put any real effort into other aspects of the game either – forechecking, backchecking, defensive play, etc. If he can’t ever get over that one-sided aspect of his game, I don’t see him lasting much longer in Nashville.

As for Roman Josi, he needs to be signed long-term right away. Of course, he’ll have the advantage in bargaining after his success at the WC. (BTW, he wasn’t just the top-scoring defenseman at the WC, but officially named “Best Defenseman” of the tournament.) Anyhoo…

i believe they should be after all there contract is over with the nhl team once there out of the playoffs or do not make it there so they all got to be allowed to do there own thing during the off season but yes i agree if you go and do something on your off season you should lose pay if you happen to be injured from what ever you were doing until you can get the skates back on and play again for your team

They should be allowed to play, but their salary should be forfeit for any amount of time they’re on the shelf due to injury outside of their NHL club. The risk will then be theirs, and they can make that choice on their own.

Say the Preds did win the lottery and traded down to the 4th or 5th pick. What kind of value do you think they would get in addition to traded 1st rounders? Do you honestly think we could get next year’s first? I just don’t know how often trades of this caliber happen in the NHL draft as opposed to the NFL draft, where they occur somewhat frequently. If we could pull something like that, I’d be onboard for sure, but it seems like they wouldn’t be able to fetch that kind of value. Shoot, as long as we stay in the top 4, I’d swap spots plus a current #3/4 defensemen to go with Klein. Think that’s the 2nd biggest weakness besides a true goal-scorer. Bartley showed signs, but still seems to be a 3rd pairing guy for now.

Also, I think you were spot on with the VN portion. In an ideal world, VN would get taken by TB so the Preds didn’t have to make that decision. Seems like if we do draft 5th, then top 4 might be Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, which leaves us with a nasty decision to make.

Really hoping we can win it and trade, but hoping that a top 4 team wins it more. May the force be with us.
