The third in our multi-part series previewing the 2011-12 Nashville Predators roster.

THIS IS THE THIRD IN OUR MULTI-PART SERIES PREVIEWING THE 2011-12 NASHVILLE PREDATORS ROSTER. A NEW INSTALLMENT WILL BE POSTED DAILY, THROUGH AUGUST 26.

—

If you missed yesterday’s post featuring Martin Erat, David Legwand and Blake Geoffrion, CLICK HERE.

—

PROJECTED LINE #3 || Niclas Bergfors – Cal O’Reilly – Colin Wilson
Niclas Bergfors has the opportunity to really shine. The problem is, he also has the opportunity to fall flat on his face. The 24 year old Sodertalje, Sweden native may end up on a line with fellow Swede Hornqvist at times this upcoming season. But to have them starting the season together would not only give Bergfors way too much credit but it would also negate all the chemistry that Hornqvist, Fisher and Kostitsyn created at the end of last season. So, for now, we’re saying Bergfors earns his stripes on the third line. The former first round pick of the New Jersey Devils has a lot of potential. In his rookie year (2009-10), he proved he can score goals in this league, collecting 21 of them en route to All-Rookie Team honors. He’s not known as a hard worker though. Matter of fact, some experts would use the word “soft.” That won’t fly with the Predators coaching staff and, if he wants to stick around, he’ll have to quiet his critics on a regular basis. If Head Coach Barry Trotz wants to set him up for success, he’ll put his new budget-conscious winger on a line with a playmaking center. That way, Bergfors can use his skill, speed and agility to get open and let the playmaker… well… make plays.
2011-12 PREDICTION: 42 points

Cal O’Reilly fits the bill. He’s a point-per-game talent at the AHL level and was only starting to make an argument for full-time NHL work when he broke his fibula last December. He never returned to game action and will see his first pro hockey match when the pre-season begins next month. Before the injury, however, he was on top of the Nashville scoring list with 18 points. Through December 18, only Steve Sullivan was producing more for the Preds. O’Reilly has always been a playmaker. He loves to make the pretty pass and excels in doing it. For example, when he led the Milwaukee Admirals in scoring in 2007-08, only 16 of his 79 points were goals. Want another example? Fine. After being drafted by Nashville in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Draft, he went on to lead his Windsor Spitfires team in scoring with an incredible 99 points. 81 of which were assists. The guy could become Adam Oates in a Preds sweater. Well, he could if he had talented linemates, was utilized on the power play more and can stay healthy. With Bergfors skating to his left, look for O’Reilly to have a breakout year.
2011-12 PREDICTION: 53 points (45 assists)

Colin Wilson goes into the season as a real wild card. He’s been in Head Coach Barry Trotz’s dog house for some time and if the former Boston University Terrier can get it right between the ears, the sky’s the limit for him. And, with a full summer off to think about how things have gone down and his future as an NHL power forward, don’t be surprised if Wilson comes into camp ready to blow everyone away. His 34 points was good enough for seventh best on the Predators last season but he managed those numbers in a limited role. Again, due to the attitude issues. Think of what he could do with a full season of top minutes and top determination on every shift. Now think of what he could do with a full season of top minutes and top determination with talented linemates like Bergfors and O’Reilly. Scary, isn’t it? Wilson’s power forward style could really compliment the creative O’Reilly and shifty Bergfors. It’s just too bad that their potential rests on his shoulders.
2011-12 PREDICTION: 40 points (with the right attitude); TRADED (with the wrong attitude)

Nashville Predators General Manager David Poile signs four of the restricted free agents embroiled in controversy.

Cal O’Reilly was the team’s second leading scorer before he broke his fibula in December. Nick Spaling was a penalty killing master on special teams. Matt Halischuk was an overtime hero in the Vancouver series. And Chris Mueller led the Milwaukee Admirals in scoring and filled in nicely at the NHL level when called upon.

All four were involved in the Qualifying Offer fiasco in which, allegedly, the Nashville Predators failed to properly file the correct paperwork in regards to seven restricted free agents. O’Reilly, Spaling, Halischuk, Sergei Kostitysn and minor leaguers Mueller, Linus Klasen and Andreas Thuresson. Since Thuresson has since been traded to the New York Rangers and Klasen has already signed a contact to play hockey in Europe, Nashville’s lone concern at this point is with their leading goal scorer Kostitsyn.

While this may very well save the Predators depth chart from being decimated (had the ruling gone in favor of the NHLPA), it’s not going to save the finances. According to the current collective bargaining agreement, when a team submits a Qualifying Offer to a restricted free agent, a player who made $599,999 or less the previous year is locked in for one more year at a 110% raise. If the player made between $600,000 and $999,999, they’re re-upped for a year at a 105% raise. If they player makes more than $1,000,000, they’re extended for the next year with a 100% raise.

Kostitsyn, however, stands to make a pretty nice paycheck after he led the team in goals and tied for the team lead in points. All for just $550,000. That’s quite a value. If the ruling comes down and the 24-year old Belarusian is deemed an unrestricted free agent, he’s free to sign wherever he wants. And, even with his comments in this post a week ago, it still gives all the bargaining chips to the player and his agent. Which, of course, means he can use other teams’ offers against Poile and the Preds to drive up the price.

As far as the players who signed, Halischuk and Spaling inked two-year deals, Mueller signed a one-year, two-way deal while O’Reilly penned a one-year deal. Halischuk and Spaling really proved their worth down the stretch. They’re terrific two-way players who play solid minutes on the bottom lines that can also chip in offensively.

It’s believed that O’Reilly was only offered a one-year tender because of the question marks he presents. In his AHL career, he was a point-per-game player. Once earning his first call-up to the NHL, he went on a tear, posting five points in 11 games (including an assist in his first ever NHL contest). But then, after signing a new two-year deal the following summer, he came into camp complacent and skated through drills like he was entitled to something. That attitude placed him back in Milwaukee and he had to earn his way back. Even in his three recalls that season, O’Reilly didn’t fare well, registering only 11 points in 31 games. Last summer, however, he reported to training camp ready to go. He found instant chemistry with veteran winger Steve Sullivan in the pre-season and that carried over into the October and November. His 18 points through December 8 were tops on the team, behind only his linemate Sullivan. But then, right when he seemed to finally be putting it all together, he went on an 11 game scoreless slide that eventually ended on January 2, 2011 when he broke his leg. He hasn’t played since.

In short, O’Reilly will get one last chance to prove whether he’s a full-time NHL center or a career AHL’er.

Either way, the good news for the Preds is that four of the five in-limbo restricted free agents are taken care of and secure. Now we wait for tomorrow when Kostitsyn has his hearing.

Fingers crossed.

The Nashville Predators have reportedly ran into an issues regarding qualifying offers to four RFA forwards.

SportsNet analyst and former NHL’er Nick Kypreos tweeted this morning that the Nashville Predators have some problems with their paperwork.

He’s reporting that the Preds failed to file Qualifying Offers to seven restricted free agent forwards: There’s Linus Klasen who’s already signed in Europe, Andreas Thuresson who’s also headed to Europe and Chris Mueller who will be in Milwuakee anyway. But then the list gets dangerous. Leading scorer Sergei Kostitysn, top penalty killer and jack-of-all-trades Nick Spaling, double overtime hero Matt Halischuk and talented playmaker Cal O’Reilly. All were restricted free agents who made less than $1 million last season. If qualified, each player would be re-upped for one more year at no more than a 10% raise. Which, for example, means the Preds would get their leading scorer back for approximately $610,000.

Can you imagine if they lose that kind of production for that kind of money?

And what about O’Reilly? Sure he was injured for the majority of the season last year but not only was he a point-per-game scorer at the AHL level but he was the one of Nashville’s leading scorers when he went down with a broken fibula. Unlike the year before, he came into training camp last summer motivated and ready. And he proved it by exploding for 18 points in the first 27 games. Only his linemate Steve Sullivan produced more (20). The real Cal O’Reilly had finally arrived! And then January 2 came and he was shelved for the rest of the year. Considering he arrived in camp complacent two years ago and then spent the majority of the campaign on injured reserve this year, many questioned whether or not the Predators would bring him back for one more go ’round. That’s when General Manager David Poile told section303.com that they had. Which makes this whole Qualifying Offer thing all the more strange.

Then there’s Halischuk. The “throw in” by the New Jersey Devils in the Jason Arnott trade last summer. Not only did he manage 12 points despite getting just 10:04 of ice time per game (a team worst among players who played more than 20 games) but all four of his regular season goals came in Nashville victories. Even more impressive is that all 12 times he appeared on the scoresheet, the Predators got at least a point in the standings (8-0-2).

But possibly the biggest loss of all would be Spaling. O’Reilly hasn’t shown he can produce at the NHL level on a consistent basis, Halischuk is a role player and Kostitsyn, until he proves otherwise, may have been a one-hit wonder. But Spaling can do anything. You can put him on the fourth line and get solid minutes out of him there, you can stick him on the penalty kill and he’ll excel there or you can give him some shifts with the second line and he’ll produce there. He’s very “Marcel Goc-esque” that way. To lose a guy that versatile, for that kind of money (approx. $800,000), would be an epic fail.

But, then again, losing any of the four for absolutely nothing would be an epic fail. Kostitsyn may not be a one-hit wonder. What if O’Reilly’s injury was just a fluke? What if Halischuk’s clutch production is just a pre-cursor to next season? And what if Spaling will be called upon for top line minutes due to injury next year and he blows up, a la his Kitchener Rangers days? All four are valuable in different ways. Especially for a team who doesn’t score a lot of goals.

Keep in mind too that if these four guys do, in fact, become unrestricted free agents on Friday because of the blunder, whatever plan Poile and the Preds had in place for July 1 is completely useless. For a team that prides itself on having plans one, two and five years out, having four important forwards suddenly leave without any compensation could derail the franchise’s course.

And that, come to think of it, may be the biggest blunder of all.

UPDATE (11:40am): Josh Cooper of The Tennessean has posted a statement by NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. It, in short, says nothing was mis-filed and that all RFA’s in question were tendered offers in a timely manner. This basically puts an end to Kypreos’ allegations. Which, quite frankly, we should never have trusted anyway. This is the same guy who, during the Preds/Leafs telecast last November, said that Shea Weber couldn’t wait to leave Music City.

—

NOTE: If you want another perspective on the situation, including a more detailed breakdown of the details, Sam Page has written an excellent post HERE.

If you listened to this past weekend’s 303:30 podcast, you know that section303.com is giving away a Ryan Ellis and Cal O’Reilly autographed copy of the book On the Wing: A History of the Windsor Spitfires.

Ellis, Nashville’s 2009 first round pick, is the captain of the current Spitfires squad and served in the same role on the silver medal winning 2011 Canadian World Junior squad.

From 2003 to 2006, O’Reilly recorded 193 points in 197 games wearing a Windsor sweater. He led them in scoring (99 points) in 2005-06 and his 149 career assists rank ninth highest in franchise history.

In order to win, listen to the podcast and answer the “trivia” question at the end of the show. E-mail the answer to info@section303.com and, at tonight’s game, we’ll pick the winner. If the winner is at the game, they can pick up the book during the second intermission. If not, we will happily mail it.

(HINT: The correct answer can be found in the second segment of the podcast)

The book’s description on amazon.ca is as follows: “On the Wing: A History of the Windsor Spitfires covers the history of the Squadron from its first inception in 1946/47, through it’s rebirth in 1975, to the team’s final two years, battling tremendous adversity to become two-time Memorial Cup Champions. Complete with more than 150 photographs, many of them in colour, and many available for the first time, On the Wing offers a history of the team, its heroes, struggles and victories, and is a volume that no true Windsor Spitfire fan, or, indeed, hockey fan, should be without.”

The two authors, Bob Duff and Jim Parker, are well versed in Spitfire-lore as they’ve been reporting on the team for The Windsor Star for nearly 50 years combined.

—

PLEASE NOTE: Those who are ineligible: As always, all those affiliated with or related to section303.com (Jeremy and Lynn Gover, Codey and Brooke Holland, Patten and Sarah Fuqua), any and all Preds bloggers as well as any and all media members. And, of course, anybody I forgot that should reasonably be disqualified.

Nick Spaling nets the game-winning goal, O'Reilly seriously injured in Preds' 4-1 win over Columbus

It took Nick Spaling 50 NHL games to net his first career goal. It only took 9 more for him to net his second.

Columbus opened the game with a quick score on Pekka Rinne, scoring in the first minute of the first period on an R.J. Umberger tip-in just 37 seconds into the game.

“If you ever want to suck the energy out of a building, just give up a goal in the first shift,” Predators coach Barry Trotz said after the game.

Luckily for the Predators and the home fans, it was the last time the Blue Jackets would see the scoresheet, despite holding the lead for the next 20+ minutes.

“The second period, we just played better hockey,” Trotz said. “We just got on the puck, stayed on the puck, created some stuff, went to the net, had a little bit of a blue paint mentality and we scored our first goal.”

That first goal came at 2:59 of the second when Shea Weber blasted a shot from the point that beat Columbus goalie Steve Mason to tie the game. Colin Wilson and Patric Hornqvist had the assists.

A little over ten minutes later, in a scramble in front of the net, Spaling buried a shot while falling that would end up being the difference maker. The assists on the goal went to Shea Weber and Joel Ward.

Patric Hornqvist would add an almost identical falling-to-the-ice goal three minutes later on the power play while Weber picked up his second assist of the night and Suter picked up his first.

Finally, at 5:53 of the third, Sergei Kostitsyn redirected a Colin Wilson shot into the net for the “Frosty Goal”. David Legwand also picked up an assist on the play.

The game looked to be well in hand and the Predators were cruising to victory when, at 7:58 of the third, the referee blew the play dead. Cal O’Reilly was near the boards next to the penalty box trying to crawl back to the bench.

The diagnosis – a broken fibula – is an injury that, if it doesn’t end Cal’s season, will at least put him on the shelf for quite a while.

Other Notes:

The Predators are 2-0-0 with Marek Svatos in the lineup.

Nashville won the first game of the calendar year for the second year in a row. Last year, they defeated Anaheim 3-1.

Wade Belak’s 8:44 of ice time, 12 shifts and 2 shots were all season highs. It was only Belak’s 5th 12+ shift game since joining the Predators in November 2008. In 86 games with the Predators, he has only seen more ice time in 4 other games.

With his 3 point night, Shea Weber has entered a tie with Steve Sullivan as the team’s leading scorer. No player is currently on pace to break 50 points. In fact, Sullivan and Weber are the only two on pace to break 40.

This is the sixth in a multi-part series leading up to the 2010-11 regular season.

—-

To help bridge the gap between now and the regular season, we will be doing a series called Three Minutes With. Every installment will be with a different member of the Nashville Predators family. Could be players. Could be coaches. Could even be fans.

In the sixth installment we have Predators center Cal O’Reilly. An undeniably talented playmaker, O’Reilly was the 2009-10 version of the perma-scratch. The perma-scratch has been the job filled by the likes of Kevin Klein, Ville Koistinen and Ryan Jones in years past. O’Reilly, arguably, has more talent than those three guys combined but may very well be the victim of a numbers game in Nashville. He’s a natural center but names like Colin Wilson, Matthew Lombardi, David Legwand, Marcel Goc and Jerred Smithson are above his on the depth chart. So where does O’Reilly fit in? He was the Milwaukee Admirals’ leading scorer in 2007-08, trailed Mike Santorelli by a mere one point for that same honor in 2008-09 and then was the Ads’ fifth leading scorer last season despite only playing in 35 games. As far as his NHL accomplishments, he tallied five points in his first 10 games, including an assist on the game-winning goal in his first ever NHL contest. After signing a two-year contract last summer, he didn’t impress at camp and found himself back in Milwaukee. After getting recalled several times last year, he put together a very average stat line of 11 points in 31 NHL games. With the veteran names above him on the depth chart, this will be a very interesting training camp for the 23-year old Toronto native.

Jeremy K. Gover: Talk a little bit about the disappointing end to last year.
Cal O’Reilly: Yeah, I mean it’s always a tough loss when you’re that close, especially when you have the game won and it turns out that way. But it happens. All you can do is forget about it. It’s always in the back of your mind but you can’t dwell on it and you’ve just got to come back and it’s a new season so it’s a fresh start.

JG: Obviously Jason Arnott moved on but Matthew Lombardi basically replaced him as far as centers go. You’re a center youself so how do you see yourself fitting in among the logjam at the center position?
Cal: Yeah, there’s a lot of competition but you know I want to play and I feel like I can play and contribute and help this team win. That’s my concern and I just want to show that I’m ready and that I’m ready to be a regular in the lineup and play some minutes.

JG: For fans that have never been to the AHL side, can you kind of explain the basic differences between the minor leagues and the big club?
Cal: Well, hockey wise, everything’s a step quicker, guys are stronger, smarter, more skilled. It’s just kind of another step up like the American League was from junior and then the NHL was from the American League. It’s just that everybody’s better. Goalies are better. You know, it’s faster and you’ve got to adjust and you’ve got to find what works for you and improve your game.

JG: Any off the ice differences?
Cal: Well you know, everything’s a little more first class (on the NHL level), as it should be. But where I was in Milwaukee, they treated us awesome too. We had everything first class there too so the whole organization’s like that.

JG: This is the second year of your deal which means you’re on the one-way leg of it. Are there any differences to your training or preparation this year as opposed to previous years?
Cal: No, I mean, every summer I prepare the same. I try to get stronger and faster, you know, everyone tries to do the same stuff. Mentally, I’ve got a one-way contract so I’ve got a little bit of security but one-way contracts don’t mean everything. It doesn’t mean you’re going to be here so that’s my mind set. Is a one-year contract doesn’t mean everything.

JG: Finally, you’re a creative guy on the ice. Obviously any player will say you can’t think out there, just react. So, when do you know to be creative and when do you know to buckle down?
Cal: Well yeah, you always want to be creative but there’s a time and a place. You know, and you don’t want to force stuff. You don’t want to force everything. When they guy is there, you make it but it’s also about the time of the game. If you need goals, if you don’t need goals, whatever.

JG: Great. Thank you so much.
Cal: No problem.

2010 Hobey Baker Award winner – and USA Hockey’s College Player of the Year – Blake Geoffrion has signed an entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators.

He inked his first pro contract at his alma mater of Granbery Elementary School in Brentwood, becoming the first native-Tennessean to sign an NHL contract.

Geoffrion, Nashville’s second round pick in 2006, played in the National Championship game this past season with the Wisconsin Badgers and even tallied two goals in three playoff games with the Milwaukee Admirals before getting injured.

General Manager David Poile and the Preds were under some pressure to get Geoffrion signed as he was set to become a Restricted Free Agent in a couple months according to the rule that a college player must be signed by the team that drafted him by the August 15 following his senior year.

But, let’s be honest, the pressure was on Nashville more so because of how important he is to the franchise as far as depth is concerned. First of all, he’s a left wing and the Preds don’t have many of those. Secondly, along with Colin Wilson, Zach Budish and hopefully Cal O’Reilly (sorry, I still believe), Geoffrion is very much a part of the offensive future of the franchise. Throw in a couple blue chip prospect defensemen in Jon Blum, Ryan Ellis and Roman Josi and you’re looking at the heart and soul of the 2012-13 Nashville Predators.

You could read more about the signing at the Predators official website.

In a statement not always heard, the Nashville Predators were thankful they played on back-to-back nights.

It means they didn’t have to think about the embarrassing loss in Dallas too long.

Despite looking like a completely different hockey team than the past two games, the Predators fell to the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 on Thursday night.

13,103 fans inside the Sommet Center witnessed a much better hockey club than the one they saw in the same building on Monday against Edmonton or the one they saw on TV on Wednesday when they “played” Dallas.

With the three goals relented against Chicago, the Predators have now allowed 15 goals in their last three games. And while there’s plenty of blame to go around, defensemen Dan Hamhuis and Kevin Klein seem to be the focal point of the collapse.

Of the 15 goals allowed, either Hamhuis or Klein have been on the ice for 10 of them. And both players have been on the ice together for seven.

For contrast, Francis Bouillon has only been on the ice for two of the 15 opposition’s goals this week and rookie Teemu Laakso has only been present for three.

The Predators really need to get it together. The defensive pairing of Hamhuis and Klein is standing out like a sore thumb, the coaching staff is scratching the few players that are hustling and leaving it all out there on every shift and the offense is sputtering.

Martin Erat became the first non-top liner to score for the Preds this season when he was credited with a goal during the second period. The puck actually went off Niklas Hjalmarsson‘s skate, went between the legs of Cristobal Huet and in the net. On a soccer score sheet it would read as an “own goal” so, for all intents and purposes, the top line of Jason Arnott, JP Dumont, Patric Hornqvist and Steve Sullivan are still the only forwards to score for Nashville.

Head Coach Barry Trotz opted for some interesting line combinations against Chicago. Dumont returned to the lineup so, in no surprise to anybody, the top line was reunited while Hornqvist was sent to the 2nd line, skating with David Legwand and Cal O’Reilly. Erat was moved down to the 3rd line in order to skate with Joel Ward and rookie Colin Wilson while Jerred Smithson centered the 4th line with Marcel Goc and Ryan Jones.

The workhorse Ben Guite and the tough guy Wade Belak were scratched.

Those four lines seem to be the strongest line combinations for the Predators in the young season. All lines had flashes of offense and, once again, Wilson and Ward showed that it’s only a matter of time before they put a few in the back of the net. That two-some is really clicking and developing some early chemistry.

So while Nashville extended their slide to four games, and only amassed 13 shots on goal, they showed a sense of heart and resiliency that fans haven’t seen in the previous two contests, which is a good sign considering they’re about to go play the fighting Ovechkin’s in Washington.

If they don’t have their act together against that team on Saturday, things could get real ugly, real fast and we’re bound to see another 6-0 or 6-1 debacle.

Or worse.

GAME NOTES:
* Registering a minus-2 against the Blackhawks, Hamhuis now has a team-low minus-7 rating.
* Both Hamhuis and Klein were on the ice for all three Chicago goals.
* Goaltender Pekka Rinne made 27 saves on 30 shots. It marked the first time a Predators goaltender has survived the first period since Monday against Edmonton.
* Ryan Suter collected his third assist of the season while Shea Weber earned his second.
* Dumont, in his first game back after recovering from what the team won’t call a concussion, logged 16:51 of ice time, registered one shot and seemed to be easing himself back to full strength.
* Goc led the Predators with three shots on goal. No other Nashville skater had more than one.
* In a relatively expected move, Mike Santorelli was reassigned to Milwaukee before the game and O’Reilly was recalled.
* This was the first time in what will be their long NHL careers that both O’Reilly brothers played on the same night. While Cal played his first game of the season in Nashville, his brother Ryan O’Reilly netted his first NHL goal in Montreal. It ended up being the game-winner for Colorado.
* The Predators will play their next five games on the road. The next home game is Thursday, October 29 against these same Chicago Blackhawks.
* The next 303:30 podcast will be available right here at section303.com this Saturday, October 17, just in time for your pre-game listening pleasure when the Predators travel to Washington to take on the Capitals.

Per the NHLPredsInsider Twitter feed, we’ve learned that Mike Santorelli has been reassigned to the Milwaukee Admirals. We’ve also learned from the same tweet, that Cal O’Reilly will be joining the Predators, fresh off a four-assist night for the Milwaukee Admirals.

The Nashville Predators have released their 2009-10 opening night roster.

With the subtraction of role playing forwards like Vern Fiddler (Phoenix), Radek Bonk (KHL, but has since been released), Scott Nichol (San Jose) and Antti Philstrom (Sweden), Nashville was looking for some of the younger guys to step up and take their shot at an NHL roster spot. Veteran NHLers like Marcel Goc (San Jose), Ben Guite (Colorado), Peter Olvecky (Minnesota) and Ben Eaves (Finland) were all signed to two-way contracts but were meant to boost competition in training camp. Creative rookie center Cal O’Reilly had signed a two-way deal as well but was considered the lead candidate for the third line center position. And we haven’t even mentioned rookies Colin Wilson, Nick Spaling and Mike Santorelli yet.

There. We just did.

All of these players were fighting for roughly five open roster spots on head coach Barry Trotz’s club. Well today, we found out just who made the cut.

O’Reilly had a rough start and never really showed much until the final week of camp, which was too little too late. He cleared waivers and was sent down to Milwaukee. Trotz has said that he will have another chance to earn a call-up though. Frankly, if he can find his game again, he’s too valuable of a player to spend the entire year in the AHL.

As for Santorelli, he didn’t disapoint after being approached with the idea of moving to wing alongside David Legwand and Martin Erat. He ended up scoring five points in five games during the pre-season and made the coaching staff look like genius’s with their impromptu request.

Last years bust became this years homerun when Patric Hornqvist ended up leading the Preds in pre-season scoring. The much-maligned Swede who hadn’t scored a goal on NHL ice since last October netted two in the regular season tune-up sessions, both against as close to NHL rosters as possible: vs. Carolina on September 26 and at Columbus a day later. While he was basically handed the first line wing position last season, he outright earned his spot this year.

Of the veteran centers that had a realistic opportunity to start the 09-10 season in Nashville, only Goc and Guite stuck. Goc had an overly impressive camp and showed that he has plenty of offensive upside for a guy who will man the bottom of the roster throughout the season. Guite, a true role player in every sense of the word, earned a spot with his second NHL team thanks to his determination and work ethic. If anyone’s hard work could be coined “the Predator way,” Guite is that guy.

The defense had quite a battle of their own coming into camp after watching Greg Zanon and Ville Koistinen sign elsewhere. Former third round pick Cody Franson didn’t make the cut despite leading all Milwaukee blueliners in scoring last year. He was the odds-on favorite for one of the two open spots but a nose injury ate into his ice time with the team and, ultimately, the inactivity gave him a one-way ticket back to the Preds’ AHL affiliate.

Predators fans might remember Alexander Sulzer from last year. Unless, of course, they blinked. The 6’1″ German only saw three and a half periods worth of NHL action last year due to a shoulder injury. He may have been signed to a one-way deal over the summer but he never really stood out in training camp and finished with an even rating despite starting the pre-season a plus-4 in the first two games.

Teemu Laakso, considered by most to be third in the three-horse race for one of the two open spots, ended up being the lead horse. Laakso will most likely be paired with free agent signee, Francis Bouillon.

“The Cube,” as he’s affectionately known, missed the last half of the season last year due to an abdominal injury. He did manage to play one game for Montreal in the playoffs last year but, for all intents and purposes, he’s been out since February. He certainly came back with a bang though. Not known as a goal scorer, Bouillon netted the game-winner against the Columbus Blue Jackets during the final pre-season game of 2009. He also finished that game with a plus-2 rating. Not bad for missing most of training camp, eh?

Veterans Jason Arnott, JP Dumont, Steve Sullivan, Legwand and Erat will be counted on to lead the way up front, with guys like Goc, Santorelli, Hornqvist and Ryan Jones chipping in. Future Preds Wilson and O’Reilly will get their chance at the NHL level as well, it just might take them a little longer than most thought.

The blueline is anchored by Norris Trophy candidate Shea Weber along with Ryan Suter, Dan Hamhuis and Kevin Klein. Bouillon and Laakso will most likely fill out the bottom defensive pairing, despite the coaching staff on record saying Bouillon and Klein will rotate as the fourth defenseman as needed.

So, in summary: Today, officially, O’Reilly cleared waivers, Franson was sent down and Joel Ward and Wilson were both placed on injured reserve, putting the Nashville Predators roster at 21 as follows (in alphabetical order):

FORWARDS: Arnott, Wade Belak, Dumont, Erat, Goc, Guite, Hornqvist, Jones, Legwand, Santorelli, Jerred Smithson, Sullivan and Jordin Tootoo.

DEFENSEMEN: Bouillon, Hamhuis, Klein, Laakso, Suter and Weber.

GOALTENDERS: Dan Ellis and Pekka Rinne.

By the way, it’s anyone’s guess what forward lines three and four will look like. Just sayin’.

Notes from Friday's Centennial SportsPlex practice as well as some comments by Coach Trotz on where Marcel Goc and Cal O'Reilly fit into things, as of now.

Notes from today’s full team practice at Centennial SportsPlex:

* Before the team took the ice, Wade Belak and Joel Ward did a light skate to stretch their groins with Strength & Conditioning Coach David Good. Colin Wilson was held out of the light skate.

* Francis Bouillon skated with the team today.

* The jersey color breakdown was as follows today:
WHITE – Jason Arnott, JP Dumont and Steve Sullivan
GREY – David Legwand, Martin Erat and Mike Santorelli
YELLOW – Ryan Jones, Patric Hornqvist and Marcel Goc
POWDER BLUE – Ben Guite, Jerred Smithson, Peter Olvecky and Nick Spaling
RED – Cal O’Reilly, Triston Grant and Jordin Tootoo
PREDS BLUE – all defensemen and goalies

* Cody Franson was back on the ice today. It was good to see him out there at least being able to try and earn a roster spot. It’s got to be tough when you’re in the running for one of the open spots and you get hurt early in camp and are forced to watch from the sidelines. (EDITORS NOTE: He may have been on the ice on Wednesday but section303.com wasn’t there to cover it so this is the first time we’ve seen him practice since the nose injury)

* Bouillon showed off his wrist shot today, tucking it under the crossbar several times.

* In succession, Bouillon, Santorelli and Alexander Sulzer all scored glove side on Dan Ellis during breakaway drills.

* Defenseman Nolan Yonkman really put his best foot forward on what is probably his final day of Predators camp. Solid breakout pass to Legwand early in the day, a hard wrist shot that barely missed and then an aggressive play on Tootoo during the 3-on-2′s. It was basically an unnecessary way to play defense at that moment but it just strengthened the case that he left everything out there today.

* Erat scored a soft goal by squeaking it under Ellis’ left pad as he went down. Ellis would love to have that one back.

* Teemu Laakso took a slapshot from above the face-off circles and it went over Ellis’ glove side shoulder. Not a good day for him today.

* During 1-on-1′s, Arnott broke in and waved off Dan Hamhuis as if to say “let me try something here.” Hammer peeled off, letting Arnott have a clear shot at the net. He deked Ellis and then lifted a backhand – from an impossible angle, mind you – but it glanced off the crossbar and out. Everyone laughed when the captain threw his head back as if to say “you’ve gotta be kidding me!”

* Franson, in one of his first great plays of camp, cleared a bouncing puck off the goal line behind Ellis to save a goal.

* What a sensational goal by O’Reilly during 2-on-0′s. Truly his first play that could be deemed “amazing” of this training camp.

* Ellis made a pretty routine glove save but then fell onto the ice and held his glove straight up in the air in a faux-celebration of a big stop. Almost as if to admit he’s had a bad day.

* Hornqvist, the most snake-bit of all the young Predators, had a gorgeous goal. He broke in on Ellis, deked like he was going left, Ellis bit, and it was only as the puck slid over the goal line that you realized he never stickhandled. As he deked left, the puck stayed the course and just slid in untouched.

* The final drill of the day was the “2-on-2+1.” A drill that puts the goals on each side of the offensive zone (against the boards), stick one player who’s only allowed to pass the puck in each corner and then have two players play against another two players, until the whistle blows which signifies four different players rotate in. During that drill, Grant scored the first goal on a pretty wrist shot he roofed against Ellis.

* Later in the drill, Sullivan (who was one of the passers in the corners) fed Santorelli who was all alone in the goalmouth. When he tried to one-time it, his stick broke in half and Sullivan immediately flexed.

* Grant scored again in the 2-on-2+1′s but it was waved off by Trotz because Tootoo was laying in the goal.

* Also during the 2-on-2+1′s, Laakso and Legwand were fighting for a loose puck on the blueline and things got a little out of control. Laakso seemed to have Legwand in a headlock but when Legwand went to get away, his helmet got pushed off and Laakso ended up high-sticking him in the face. Despite going straight to the bench area where there was a trainer standing-by, he took it pretty well, skating out to his teammates in an effort to find out who he was tangled up with. Once he identified the culprit, he skated over and bear-hugged him from behind and talked some trash… in a good way.

* This was O’Reilly’s best day of camp so far. It’s too bad it’s late in camp because what he showed today was that he’s gotten his game back on track. He was moving off the puck extremely well, had some nice shots – including that highlight goal earlier – and even got to show off his creativity a little. Something that had been severely lacking until this stage of camp.

* Trotz on O’Reilly: “Cal hasn’t had a good camp and if you talk to Cal, he knows that. The compete level wasn’t where it should be. Cal’s very talented, he’s got great vision and he’s going to get another chance to prove himself but it gets tough when you don’t get off to a good start and there’s not a lot of games and there’s guys really competing for jobs. I think coming out of the first part of camp, Cal’s behind a lot of guys because he’s compete level wasn’t where it should be. But, since we’ve had a talk, his compete level’s been very high, his attention to detail’s been very high and his ability is starting to show again.”

* Trotz on Goc: “He’s had a really good camp. I see him fitting in as one of our four centermen. Marcel’s been a really good player for us in the exhibition season. You can tell he’s played at this level. Pretty good draw guy, responsible and he has a little more offensive side when he’s been put in that role.”

DAY 12 STANDOUTS:

Cal O’Reilly and Francis Bouillon

DAY 12 DUDS:

Dan Ellis (but was in a good mood while having a rough day so that’s actually a good sign)

The Nashville Predators secured what most think is a significant piece of their puzzle today by re-signing center Cal O’Reilly.

Too bad Pred fans will have to wait until 2010-11 to see him wearing an NHL sweater full-time.

On the heels of his 23rd birthday, O’Reilly inked a two-year deal with Nashville. The first year is a two-way deal, allowing him to be sent down to Milwaukee. The second year, however, is a one-way deal which will keep him with the big club the entire season.

The former 5th round pick will make $550,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the AHL level during the 2009-10 season. The NHL-exclusive year of the contract will pay him $575,000.

While a point-per-game scorer in the AHL, the Toronto native showed flashes of brilliance in just about every game he played in with the big club. He tallied three goals in his 11 NHL games despite not being known as a goal scorer. He also provided two helpers while up in Nashville and consistently showed off his creativity. O’Reilly is a huge part of the franchise’s future, it’s just hard to fit him in on a roster over-loaded at the center position.

Jason Arnott, David Legwand and Jerred Smithson have locks on the 1st, 2nd and 4th line center positions, respectively. With every passing moment, it seems like Colin Wilson will be slotted in as the #3 center and, short of moving to wing, that muscles O’Reilly right off the NHL depth chart. With Arnott and Smithson being in the last year of their contracts in 2010-11, it appears this move might force some decisions to be made next summer. Do they like Smithson enough to keep him off the waiver wire? Do they want to get something for Arnott before he becomes a UFA? Is Wilson everything they thought he’d be as an NHLer? All of these questions must be addressed when bringing O’Reilly into the fold full-time next year.

But for now, it appears Cal is destined to lead the Admirals in scoring once again.

Unless, of course, he plays so well in camp that they’re forced to pay him the half million this season.
