I'm from New Orleans and my prayers are with you. What happened here was an embarassment for a lot of us Native New Orleanians who didn't depend on the government, we did help ourselves. It's unfortunate that we weren't the topic or the norm that was shown on National News. We had one of the worst Mayors in the history of New Orleans, who encouraged this type of behavior, because it was everyone else's fault. However, we had and paid for our insurance and rebuilt with those funds...only! Would you believe that there are still those, who have always depended on the government, that are looking for the goverment to pay their rent? I can't wait to retire and move to Tennessee!!!

Dear Folks, Having lived in Florida all my life, I understand just how easily the forces of Nature can wreak havoc on our lives and property. I agree, I didn't see much of your pain and suffering on TV except for FOX News, as compared to oil slicks, would-be bombers, etc. When we had the triple whammy hurricanes in '04, Jeb Bush was reminding us to get our butts to higher ground, in plenty of time to do so. Y'all just didn't have any way of knowing just how much water was fixin' to converge on the city at once. Afterward, I didn't see your Governor or Mayor standing around wringing hands and griping at the FEMA and the President. They seemed to be too busy "marshalling the troops" for relief efforts.

As far as looting - I'm not sure how much looting goes on where so many homeowners tend to be armed - hunters, or otherwise; and where the law is taking their job seriously.

Having family members who have done reconstruction/repair work for phone and power utilities all their adult lives, the folks in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi tended to treat the compassionate utility crews better then they were treated the minute they hit the Louisiana line. Folks here cooked for them, brought them refreshments, thanked them. Then in LA, they had to be escorted by law enforcement or military units to get their job done.

Please remember, it's going to take time and patience to get everything back on, in working order. But they are doing the best they can and don't get in their way.

Also, a clean garden sprayer filled with rainwater, or clean water of any kind, makes a terrific shower - rather than no shower; and misting water onto the bed at night makes it feel cooler for a little while. God bless and keep y'all safe in your hour of need.

Once again I am both filled with hope and pride for the vast majority of the American peoples, and also chagrin, shame and anger at some. It saddens me greatly...... also pisses me off to the point where I'm praying that some of the people who left such ignorant, self absorbed, grandstanding, small minded people read this! And hopefully they will GET A LIFE!

Your article, while sweet, is flawed. To say that the Nashville floods has received no attention simply isn't true. Every broadcast and cable network, every major newspaper, every wire service, every web-based news service, had extensive dispatches. So to say Nashville was ignored is, well, just not true. It's also not true that this even comes close to approaching the $9 billion (in 1994 dollars) Northridge earthquake in California. I've been to Nashville this past week and, while there is a lot of damage, it is nowhere near that from the Northridge quake. Bad? Certainly. But you really shouldn't exaggerate to make your point... There's no need.

The people of Nashville acted admirably. They deserve to be lauded. But don't do it with some self-righteous smugness that has no basis in reality.

I completely agree Mike. I don't know why the author didn't the author just say the reason we were ignored is because he was a higher class of people than the scum that live in Noew Orleans. Instead the author says " large part of the reason that we are being ignored is because of who we are." Give me a break!

DD - That NO was almost destroyed by Hurricane Katrina is another of the myths surrounding the whole disaster. NO actually fared quite well throughout the storm itself; it was the failure of the federal levee system that caused all the havoc. And the federal government KNEW YEARS IN ADVANCE that a Category 4 or 5 hurricane would devastate the region. And did nothing. Computer models played it out, articles were written, presentations given . . . nothing was done to prevent the damage.

And that should be a criminal offense, IMHO.

Thanks for your insight, Jessica. While both cities suffered horribly, one really can't compare the two equally. I live just north of New Orleans, and had many, many friends and family suffer unimaginable hardships in the aftermath of Katrina. Some fled the city for their lives, never to return to their homes, as there literally -still- is nothing to return to. The Blame Game wins nobody points here, y'all. Yes, some people behaved abominably after the failure of the federal levees and the innundation of the city. Yes, some were African-American. Some were also killed for trying to cross a bridge to safety. People were scared, people were desperate, thousands of people died. Please folks . . . try not to judge.

Ben....and all the other negative people that think yall(Nashville) did something great…. Ya didn’t!!!!! Trust me..Yall have not one clue what your are talking about. Ben you must be about 11 years old with a new computer. How can, or would you take a jab at New Orleans? Katrina missed New Orleans. The levees broke the next day!!!! People were returning home when they broke. I was one of them that was on my way home. 1 million people were displaced by a manmade disaster? 500,000 homes and business destroyed. People could not return home for 40 days. People that stayed behind or returned home were stuck on roof tops, not waiting for help, but looking to survive. You people had high ground to get to. We had roof tops and 100 degree temperatures with no food or water. You are absolutely ignorant! You have got to be kidding? 2500 people died from a manmade disaster. WTF. You people (we are Nashville)? WTF.. yall need to think about what you’re saying. Also looting was for survival, not TVs. I was a fan of Nashville, but will never return reading how insensitive your entire community has reacted….. This volunteer will help somewhere else! The only thing you need to do is ask yourself why would you take JABs at New Orleans when we have 400 people up there volunteering......... I have read 500 post and most are as dumb as yours(BEN). You can keep your proud city and your fast food restaurants. I can tell you this I will be posting every negative post an every national web site I can find to get you the exposure yall need. That yall must be the most insensitive people on the planet!

I agree with many of the other commenters. I came across this as a result of a YouTube photo montage someone emailed to me which borrowed some of the lines from this article... which I quite frankly felt were atrocious, and in some cases seemed to border on dog-whistle racism.

To preface my comments, I live about two hours away from Nashville, and have a lot of family in the Nashville area. I love the city and the people. And kept close tabs with what was going via my Nashville friends' and relatives' emails and and Facebook updates. I'm very sympathetic and my point is not to diminish the impact of the flood.

But...

To even brush up against comparing it to Katrina is ludicrous. Nearly 1600 people lost their lives in Louisiana alone... nearly 2000 all told. The death toll for the flood was 31. Virtually all of New Orleans was without water and power, and the lower ninth ward was all but destroyed.

The petulant and self-righteous Rush Limbaugh-like tone of this column does more disservice to the citizens of Nashville than it does to anyone. My friends and family in Nashville handled themselves with dignity, aplomb, and good humor throughout this ordeal. The author's classless sniping and whining and sanctimonious chest-thumping is his own.

The flooding was a tragedy. We all empathize with what you've been through. You should pat yourselves on the back for coming through this devastation so successfully. Yes, you're awesome! Thanks for reminding us. OTOH, the way some of you attack and insult other commenters just because they say something you don't like is ironic and hypocritical. Your lack of self-awareness is astonishing.

You should pat yourselves on the back for coming through this devastation so successfully. Yes, you’re awesome! Thanks for reminding us. OTOH, the way some of you attack and insult other commenters just because they say something you don’t like is ironic and hypocritical. Your lack of self-awareness is astonishing.

Nashville is like a second hometown to me. I love it there. I want to retire there here in a few years. It is one of the most beautiful cities I have even been to.

However, because I have family there, I was greatly interested in following the flood story everyday. I never had much of a problem seeing it on the local news for a few days after it started. A couple of national news stations also made updates. And the Internet was full of pictures and stories.

Perhaps, not as much as I would have liked to see, but it was out there.

Keep in mind, power outages prevent many from Nashville from seeing the news while others in the country tuned in daily for updates. Flooding also prevent certain types of interviews and even access.

Again, I still would have loved to see a lot more coverage, but it wasn't totally ignored.

Churches all across the nation still have prayer groups and relief programs active.

May God bless the whole state.

Your friend,

“It was as if fields of ant hills were all kicked at once and the cutting and cleaning and carrying and cooperation began. It was really a sight to see except that nobody came to see it.
Tennessee is my home state. I spent much time in the Nashville area growing up and was there visiting family just weeks before this terrible tragedy. I am devastated by the loss of life, homes, history etc. But I am PROUD of my TN heritage and the way Nashville has responded to this crisis! You can take the gal out of TN, but you can't take TN out of the gal...proud to be a Tennessean. May God bless you as you rebuild your great city.
